Permitted Development

If you are considering improvements to your home it is worth noting that many domestic projects can benefit from ‘permitted development rights’.  This enables homeowners to extend their homes without the need to apply for planning permission saving time, money and stress.

You can build a single-storey extension to the rear of your property and extend by 3m, if the property is terraced or semi-detached, and by 4m if detached.  As of May 2019, these distances can now be doubled to 6m and 8m respectively subject to a ‘neighbour consultation’ process.

For side extensions and two-storey extensions the situation is slightly more complicated as there are additional factors determining whether permitted development is applicable.  There are some really useful guides provided by Government that explain what is and isn’t allowed under permitted development - links to these are provided below.
